Warren Buffett Donates $3.17 Billion To Charity In A Single Day

Just as he had done in the past, Billionaire Businnessman, Warren Buffett on Monday donated roughly $3.17 billion of Berkshire Hathaway Inc stock to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and four family charities, his largest contribution in a more than decade-long plan to give away his fortune topping last year’s $2.86 billion gift, thanks to the rising value of his conglomerate’s share price over the past year, to charity.

Most of the donation (about $2.4 billion) was placed in the hands of the richest man on the planet, Bill Gates. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, run by the Microsoft cofounder and his wife, focuses on causes like ending world poverty, improving U.S. schools and combating infectious diseases like HIV, polio and malaria.

Buffett also gave hundreds of millions to four charities connected to close family members: the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, the charity named for his late wife that focuses on family planning programs and college scholarships, plus each of his three children’s foundations — the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, the Sherwood Foundation and the NoVo Foundation — which are run by Howard, Susan and Peter Buffett, respectively.

“God Needs Dollars And Pounds, Use Them As Offerings” – Cleric tells congregants

The Anglican Chaplain for Uganda’s Parliament has been advising Christians who give their regular offering in shillings (the local currency) to use dollars and pounds as well, the privately owned Daily Monitor newspaper is reporting.

Rev Canon Christine Shimanya said this during a sermon at Namugongo Martyrs Church, just outside the capital, Kampala, on Sunday:

“Some Christians have dollars and pounds earned from international conferences; instead they change the money to shillings before bringing it to church as offertory. Bring those dollars and pounds, God needs them.”

Another clergyman, Canon Henry Ssegawa, has come out in support of Rev Shimanya call, saying the church needs money with higher purchasing power, the Daily Monitor reports.

Photos: The First Ever Gay Muslim Wedding Takes Place In The United Kingdom

24-year-old Jahed Choudhury and 19-year-old Sean Rogan tied the knot in Walsall registry office in traditional Muslim attire. The pair, who’ve been together for two years, first met when Choudhury was crying on a bench in Darlaston. .

He told Express and Star: “I’d not long overdosed and I was crying on a bench and Sean came over and asked if I was okay.” Adding that Sean gave him hope at his lowest point and has stood by him ever since.

Choudhury said that being an openly-gay Muslim made him feel like something of a ‘black sheep’ and that he ‘stood out like a sore thumb’ and often felt trapped between his sexuality and faith. .

He tried to deny his orientation and even tried taking medication and a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh. Although his family were’t present for the ceremony, Choudhury believes the wedding is significant progress for the Muslim and LGBT communities alike. .

He added: “My family doesn’t want to come on the day, they just don’t want to see it, it’s too embarrassing for them.” Choudhury says that some of his family members dismiss his sexuality and happy relationship with Sean as a ‘disease’ or a phase. .

He added: “I want to say to all people going through the same thing that’s it’s okay – we’re going to show the whole world that you can be gay and Muslim.”
