Breaking News: “I Won’t Return To Nigeria Until Doctors Are Satisfied” – President Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari has said he would only return to Nigeria when his London doctors certify him well enough to do so.
“… I am extending my leave until the doctors are satisfied that certain factors are ruled out,” Mr. Buhari said in a February 5 letter to the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, informing the National Assembly of the extension of his vacation.
The letter was exclusively obtained by PREMIUM TIMES on Saturday.
Although snippets of the letter were publicised by the presidency and the Senate on February 5 and 6 respectively, this is the first time the entire text and copy of the correspondence would be made available.
The President wrote, “Further to my letter dated 18th January 2017 in which I notified the Distinguished Senate of taking part of my annual leave.
“During my leave, I took the opportunity to have routine check-ups and consult my long standing doctors in London.
“In the course of the routine examinations, certain test result indicated the need for a course of medications and further appointments have been scheduled for next week.
“I am therefore notifying the Distinguished Senate that I am extending my leave until the doctors are satisfied that certain factors are ruled out. In the circumstances, the vice president will continue to act on my behalf.
“Please accept, Distinguished Senate President, the assurances of my highest consideration.”
Mr. Buhari had on January 18 written the National Assembly, notifying the legislature that he was proceeding on a 10-day leave and temporarily transferring presidential power to Vice-president Yemi Osinbajo.
The leave was supposed to last 10 work days, between January 23 and February 6, according to the letter transmitted to both chambers of the National Assembly.
The President, whose real medical condition remained unknown, was expected to arrive the country on February 5 for resumption of work on February 6.
But the extension of his vacation means Mr. Osinbajo will continue to exercise presidential powers for days or weeks to come.
This is the third time Mr. Buhari has transferred power to Mr. Osinbajo since the two leaders were inaugurated in May 2015.
The first time was on February 5, 2016 when the President embarked on a five-day vacation; and the second was in June 2016 when Mr. Buhari travelled to the United Kingdom for treatment of what the Presidency described as ear infection.
A formal notice to both chambers of the National Assembly on the president’s intention to proceed on leave and hand over power temporarily to the vice-president is in compliance with Section 145 (1) of the Nigerian Constitution.

12,000 Nigerians In Germany To Be Deported
Except something providential happens, over 12,000 Nigerians seeking asylum in Germany risk being deported next year.Germany’s Global Head of Programmes, Migration and Development, Dr. Ralf Sanftenberg, dropped the hint yesterday during a courtesy call on the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa in Abuja.
Sanftenberg, who led a delegation from Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development, was on a site assessment mission for assisted-voluntary returnees of Nigeria’s irregular migrants in his country.
The mission is saddled with the responsibility of coordinating the Centre for International Migration and Development (CIM), which offers returnees support service and knowledge transfer.
“We have over 37,000 Nigerians in Germany and more than 12,000 of them are asylum seekers. There is a little chance for their applications to be moved and they may be forced to come back to Nigeria next year,” he stated.
According to the envoy, about 99 per cent of them are likely to be denied asylum status since Nigeria is not considered one of the war-ravaged countries.
Sanftenberg, however, noted that if they were willing to return home voluntarily, they would be assisted through a support programme organised by the German government.
A member of the delegation, who is a consultant to the programme, Stephanie Alofokhia-Ghogomu, urged the Nigerian asylum seekers to return home. Alofokhia-Ghogomu, who was also a voluntary returnee, said she had spent half of her life in Germany, adding that she had to return home to contribute to the development of Nigeria.
Dabiri-Erewa commended the German Chancellor, Angel Merkel for her professional handling of illegal migration in the country.“So, we will look forward to seeing what you want to do in terms of setting up German migrant services in Nigeria,” she added.
The presidential aide urged the affected Nigerians to return home and take advantage of the assistance being provided by the German government.“For Nigerians in Germany, who may wish to return, there is a better place for them at home to help them live a better live. Germany has the Ministry of Internal Affairs and budget for the returnees. And there are services that would be provided through the German government which they can enjoy,” Dabiri-Erewa stated.
“Regulate Social Media Usage By Youths” – Sultan of Sokoto
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammed Saad Abubakar III, has called for the regulation of social media usage by the youths, saying the medium was being used to fuel conflicts around the world.
The sultan made this call while laying the foundation of the N508 million University of Ilorin Centre for Qur’an Memorisation, in Ilorin, Kwara State at the weekend.
This is just as the Chief Imam of the university, Professor Abdulganiyu Oladosu, told the Muslim ummah that only those who contributed generously to the cause of Allah can attain “piety, righteousness and Allah’s consciousness.”
Speaking at the ceremony, the Sultan, who was represented by the Emir of Shonga, Dr. Haliru Yahayah, reiterated that Islam was religion of peace and urged the ummah to continue to live in harmony with their neighbours.
He, however, admonished Nigerians, particularly parents, to be careful and to regulate the usage of social media by the youths, blaming social media for most of the crises confronting the world.
“Let us be careful about the social media; we must regulate it and sanction at home,” the sultan said.
While noting that the social media should not be totally discarded, the royal father said, “We must develop strategies on how to manipulate that space to our advantage. Their reality is different from our reality.”
In a Juma’a sermon that preceded the launch, the chief imam of the university spoke on the rewards of donating to the cause of Allah.
“The cost of the project is to be funded solely by the Muslim community and not by the university,” he added.
On his part, the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu Gambari, said though the university was established for academic purposes, the addition of the centre would facilitate the learning and memorisation of the holy Qur’an.
The Kwara State governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, who was represented by the commissioner for water Resources, Barrister AbdulRasaq Akorede, described the memorisation of the Qur’an as a noble cause in the sight of Allah and urged Muslims to always reflect on its meaning.
He promised that his government would support and encourage the teaching of Islamic education to correct the misconceptions about the religion.
