Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) general secretary, Mohammed Sanusi has disclosed that the country’s football ruling body will pay the players and officials of the senior women national team as soon as funds are available.

The Super Falcons returned from Cameroon on Sunday morning after emerging as champions of the African Women’s Cup of Nations for the eighth time, and Sanusi has appealed to the team to exercise a little patience with the federation which is currently going through recession at the moment.

“We know we have financial commitment to you (players and officials of Super Falcons) and we have not at any time stated otherwise. But the money is not readily available at the moment,” Sanusi told NFF media.

“I have come to appeal to you, to understand the situation of the Federation, to understand the situation of the country at the present and exercise patience.

“We will pay you all monies you are being owed as soon as we receive same from the Government, just as we paid the U17 boys who won the Fifa U17 World Cup in Chile last year, after the tournament.

“And just as we sorted out Coach Samson Siasia’s wages as soon as we had the funds, after the Olympics.”

UPDATE!!!

• Super Falcons Reject $100 a player travelling allowance

Players of the Super Falcons, who on Saturday defeated Cameroon to win their eighth African Women Nations Cup title, yesterday rejected the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) directives to vacate their Agura Hotel, Abuja camp, saying they would not leave the camp until all their emoluments were settled.

The players claim that the NFF has not paid them camp allowances, match bonuses and their coaches’ salaries, which have accrued for over eight months.

One of the players, who pleaded anonymity, told The Guardian that “officials of the federation came to give each of us $100 as transport allowance and told us to go home with the promise that they will pay us in January.

“That was the same trick they used to deceive us after the qualifiers in Abuja and up till now nobody has said anything about the outstanding bills.

“Now, they are telling us that they are making arrangements for the president to host us at the Presidential Villa. All these are stories we are tired of. We want our money, full stop.”

The NFF yesterday pledged to pay the players and their officials for winning the Women Africa Cup of Nations, but it craved the understanding of the team that the money is not readily available at the moment.

In a statement yesterday, NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, who met with the players and officials at the Agura Hotel, said the Federation was not happy owing players and coaches, but present severe economic challenges informed that it could only continue to seek the understanding of these persons, as well as hoteliers, travel agents and Management and Staff until the situation improves.

“There is no gainsaying that there is severe economic challenges and all organisations, whether government or private, are feeling the pinch. It is not Government’s doing; it is not anybody’s doing. We know we have financial commitment to you (players and officials of Super Falcons) and we have not at anytime stated otherwise. But the money is not readily available at the moment.

“I have come to appeal to you, to understand the situation of the Federation, to understand the situation of the country at the present and exercise patience. We will pay you all monies you are being owed as soon as we receive same from the Government, just as we paid the U17 boys who won the FIFA U17 World Cup in Chile last year, after the tournament. And just as we sorted out Coach Samson Siasia’s wages as soon as we had the funds, after the Olympics.”

Photos: Lagos Federal High Court Sentence 3 Foreigners To 6years Imprisonment For Drugs

bolivians-jubilate

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday sentenced three Bolivians to six years’ imprisonment for dealing in illicit drugs.

The convicts are Reuben Jorge, Yhugo Moreno and Yerko Dorado.

They were sentenced by Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo, who affirmed their guilty plea to the two counts pressed against them by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

The convicts had been in detention since February 3, 2013, when they were arrested by operatives of the NDLEA on Daily Times Estate, Satellite Town, Lagos State, the base where they illegally produced Ephedrine and Methamphetamine.

The convicts were said to have been housed by their Nigerian accomplices between November 2011, and February 2012, before they were caught.

The NDLEA had told the judge that the foreigners violated Section 22 (a) of the NDLEA Act and were liable to be jailed for life or imprisoned for not less than 25 years.

But in her judgment on Tuesday, Justice Oguntoyinbo said what the law prescribed was a maximum of 25 years, but that a judge could, based on his discretion, impose a lesser jail term.

She therefore sentenced the convicts to six years on each count. She said the sentence would run concurrently and would start from February 3, 2013, when they were arrested.

Justice Oguntoyinbo said, “It is, therefore, in the light of Section 22 (a) and Section 12 of the NDLEA Act, that these three defendants, having been found guilty and convicted of the offences alleged in counts one and two of the charge (sheet) dated the 18th day of February, 2013, are now sentenced on count one to a period of six prison years and on count two to a prison period of six years.

“Both sentences shall run concurrently and shall be calculated from the date the defendants were first arrested, which is the 3rd day of February, 2013.

The defendants have benefited from the commitment of their counsel. Both defendants and the NDLEA have a right of appeal.”

Following the judgment, the three convicted foreigners jubilated outside the courtroom where they hugged one another and posed for a snapshot by Punch correspondent.

The convicted foreigners were first arraigned on March 23, 2013, before Justice Ibrahim Buba of the same court, where they earlier pleaded not guilty to the initial six counts pressed against them by the NDLEA.

Following their not guilty plea, Justice Buba admitted them to bail in the sum of N50m each with two sureties in like sum.

The judge said one of the sureties must be an owner of a landed property in Lagos valued at not less than N10m, while the other must be a Bolivian with resident permit in Nigeria.

The foreigners were equally ordered to report weekly and sign an attendance register at the office of the NDLEA, to show that they were still in Nigeria.

They were mandated to sign and file an undertaking that they would not delay trial.

In spite of the bail, the foreigners remained in detention as they found it difficult to perfect the bail

Nigerian Man Jailed 27years In Cambodia For Drugs And Believed To Still Be Operating From Jail, Loses Reprieve

nwoko-jailed-cambodia

Precious Chineme Nwoko, 25, has had his hope for reprieve dashed. Nwoko, also known as Precious Max and linked with several Australian women arrested for being his mules, was sentenced to 27 years imprisonment in 2014. .

His hope for reprieve was dashed by a Cambodian appeals court on Tuesday. The court upheld his prison term. The court also upheld the prison terms slammed on Australian, Ann Yoshe Taylor, 43. The duo were all convicted for trying to smuggle heroin to Australia. .

The lower court had sentenced Taylor to 23 years and Nwoko to 27 years. Savarino and Taylor were arrested in September 2013 after police found 2.2kg of heroin in Taylor’s luggage as they prepared to fly together to Australia. .

Nwoko, Savarino’s boyfriend, was believed to have masterminded the smuggling. Asked today by journalists why he used dating scams to turn women into drug mules, Nwoko became enraged, according to a report by Australia’s Sydney Morning Herald .

“Are you stupid? Get out of here. You think you can come here and ask questions while I am jail,” he shouted at Luke McMahon, a Melbourne writer who has revealed Taylor’s plight in an exclusive story for Fairfax Media.

Nwoko, who is known as Precious Max, had posed as a successful South African businessman when he befriended Taylor on the internet. He later paid for her airfare to Cambodia. .

On September 18, 2013, Nwoko asked Taylor, who was due to fly back to Australia, to take a backpack full of samples for an arts and crafts business in which he claimed to have an involvement.

She hadn’t made it to the check-in counter when police swooped and found heroin in the backpack. Nwoko was arrested soon after. .

Australian police are investigating a growing number of internet scams targeting Australians in south-east Asian countries, including Cambodia, where Nwoko is believed to be still operating scams, from his jail cell, targeting Australian women.

“Stop Making Expensive Demands From Me” – President Buhari To Nigerian Elites

buhari-party-750x375

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday asked Nigerian elite to stop making what he called expensive demands from his administration because things would no longer be done in the old way.

He warned them to stop insisting that things should be done the old way which impoverished the nation.

The President spoke during a meeting he had with a group of Nigerians in the Diaspora, on the margins of the 3rd Dakar International Forum on Peace and Security in Africa in Dakar, Senegal.

According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President said his administration was on the right track to improve the image of the country by entrenching accountability and probity in governance.

He told the 11-man Nigerian delegation of association leaders resident in Senegal and Cote D’ Ivoire, that the last 16 years of poor handling of the nation’s resources and infrastructure have continued to impact negatively on the country.

The President, “This administration is pleased we won the election, we are pleased Nigerians are cooperating with us. But the problems are so enormous that we need the cooperation of Nigerians, particularly the elite.

“They (elite) should reflect on the condition of the country, and stop making expensive demands because things cannot be done the old way.”

On the welfare of Nigerians in the Diaspora, Buhari assured them that the Federal Government would continue to promote good neighbourliness and improve the negative perception about Nigerians abroad.

“Nigerians are known for their competitiveness and I am very passionate about Nigeria. I will continue to preach good neighbourliness and work hard to improve the numerous human and material resources in the country,” he said.
