“Buhari Often Skipped School And Was Always Flogged By Schoolmaster” – John Pade

President Muhammadu Buhari was a reluctant student in his early years, John

Paden, his authorised biographer, has revealed.

According to Paden, a professor of international studies, in his book, ‘Muhammadu Buhari: The Challenges of Leadership in Nigeria’, Buhari often skipped school, which earned beatings by the schoolmaster.

He wrote that Buhari decided to take his studies seriously with the encouragement of Waziri al-Hassan and Mamman Daura.

“In part because of love for the outdoors, Buhari was a reluctant student in his early years. He would often skip school altogether, although this always resulted in beatings with a cane by the schoolmaster. Only with the encouragement of Waziri al-Hasan and Mamman Daura did he eventually settle down and take his studies seriously,” Paden wrote in chapter one under the subtitle: ‘Schooling and Leadership Values.’

However, he narrated how Buhari eventually became good at his studies and sports – and emerged the head boy of his secondary school.

“The early years of schooling were conducted in Hausa; thereafter, English was used. Buhari began to do very well in English, mathematics, and Arabic, as well general studies. Buhari also became involved in cross-country running, in which persistence and endurance were key,” Paden wrote.

“Buhari would spend nine years at boarding school, and fortunately he had good teachers.”

The president’s biographer also wrote that he exuded leadership qualities at a young age.

“The loss of his father at an early age was compensated for by British teachers who treated each student as if he was their own child. Buhari has often said that in the early days of his schooling, the British sent their best teachers out to northern Nigeria, not their worst. An American Peace Corps teacher in the school also impressed Buhari and the other boys with his love for biology,” he wrote.

“Most important, the simple student dress code meant that students looked much the same, except for an occasional student with a wristwatch. The British teachers made a point of disregarding the status of the fathers of the boys. Every boy had to make it on his own.

“The point became clearer when he was eighteen years old and entered a merit-based competiton, sponsored by the Elder Dempster shipping line, for selected secondary students to spend a summer holiday in Britain. At that time, many of the northern elite were sending their sons to the prestigious Barewa College, and it was not clear that Buhari had a chance against such competition.

“Buhari had been class monitor in second form. He was house prefect in fifth form. In sixth form, he was house captain and head boy of the school. His performance in his studies was excellent. But his leadership potential was outstanding. He was chosen for the summer scholarship to visit Britain.”

Photos: 85year Old Catholic Archbishop Desmond Tutu Announces That He Wants To Die By Assisted Suicide

tutu0

South Africa’s retired Anglican archbishop and anti-apartheid icon Desmond Tutu marked his 85th birthday yesterday. He also announced same yesterday that he wants the right to end his own life.
The anti-apartheid veteran said laws against helping people to die should be abolished. He claimed he has the right to be ‘allowed to pass on to the next phase in the manner of my choice’.

In an article published on Washington Post, the former Anglican archbishop of Cape Town said:

‘Just as I have argued firmly for compassion and fairness in life, I believe that terminally ill people should be treated with the same compassion and fairness when it comes to their deaths.

Terminally ill people have control over their lives, so why should they be refused control over their deaths? Why are so many instead forced to endure terrible pain and suffering against their wishes. Regardless of what you might choose for yourself, why should you deny others the right to make this choice?

‘For those suffering unbearably and coming to the end of their lives, merely knowing that an assisted death is open to them can provide immeasurable comfort.

‘I have prepared for my death and have made it clear that I do not wish to be kept alive at all costs. I hope I am treated with compassion and allowed to pass on to the next phase of life’s journey in the manner of my choice.

In refusing dying people the right to die with dignity, we fail to demonstrate the compassion that lies at the heart of Christian values.

‘I pray that politicians, lawmakers and religious leaders have the courage to support the choices terminally ill citizens make in departing Mother Earth. The time to act is now.’

‘I myself am even closer to the departures hall than arrivals, so to speak, and my thoughts turn to how I would like to be treated when the time comes.’

Desmond Tutu’s plea  comes at a time when assisted dying campaigners in Britain have run into a barrier because of the refusal of MPs to weaken the safeguards built into criminal law.

Anyone found guilty of helping someone kill themselves can face a 14-year jail sentence.

However, assisted suicide is lawful in Belgium, the Netherlands and Oregon in the US.

This 20year Old Houseboy Stole ₦1.9Million From His Boss To Build A House For His Family (Photos)

bbyy

20-year-old Uweb Samuel, a Cross River State indigene working as a domestic help in Magodo area of Lagos, sat on the grounds of the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja, with his head bowed.

Shaking his head intermittently to register remorse, Uweb said he did not imagine he would end up the way he had.

“My boss trusted me so much. In fact, I had access to every part of the house,” he said.

But that trust came back to bite his boss, Mr. Ajadi Babatunde, few days ago when he came back from a trip abroad and left a wad of pound sterling notes in his room.

Saturday PUNCH learnt that he trusted his manservant so much that he left the house but left his key on the door of his room..

That day, Babatunde took a peek inside the room and saw something he could not resist.

“I counted the £50 notes and there were 67 there,” he said.

Using (₦580 – £1) £3,350. In current official exchange rate of pounds to naira, that amounts to ₦1.9m. Samuel said he knew it was a lot of money that could change his life, but thought about building a house immediately.

He said,

“There is no house in our village in Calabar that my siblings and I could call a home. So, I thought it was my chance to build a house for my family.

“I took the money before my boss came back home and took it to my sister’s husband to hide for me.

“When my boss came back and started to look for the money, he asked me and I told him I did not see any money. Even though it was just the two of us in the house, I insisted I did not take any money.

“Some workers were doing some renovation work in the compound. He asked if any of them entered the house but they said no. The workers said I must have been the one who took the money and started to beat me.

“They tortured me even though my boss did not instruct them to do that. I still did not admit that I took it. But when it got to a stage, I told them I would kill myself, my boss then told them to take me to the police. But his brother came and spoke with me gently, that was why I decided to confess.”

By the time the police stormed the house of Samuel’s brother-in-law, half of the money was gone, while the man had gone into hiding. Samuel sobbed as he said he was sad that he betrayed his boss’ trust.

According to him, he was being paid N15,000 monthly as a domestic help but that his crime had nothing to do with his salary.

“I wish my boss would forgive me. I did not know this is what will happen to me,” he said.

The police have said investigation was ongoing on the case and the suspect would soon be charged to court.

Two Ladies Allegedly Beaten And Burnt To Death Over Lesbianism In Makurdi (Graphic Photos)

Muhammadu-Buhari1

Two ladies were on Thursday set ablaze by angry mob at the ‘Owner’s Occupier area’ in Makurdi, Benue State for allegedly involving themselves in acts of lesbianism.

According to the report making the round on social media, the victims were caught in the act and were stripped naked, beaten and set ablaze on the street by residents of the area.

However, the Benue State Police Command has denied knowledge of the report, saying that several efforts to get the details of the report had proved abortive.

Speaking with DAILY POST on Thursday evening, the Benue State Police PRO, Moses Yamu said, “We have seen the story on social media but report has not been made.

“I still doubt if this happened in Benue. How can such event happen in Makurdi and the police is not informed? Anyway, we shall let the public know once we are done with our investigations.”
