APC, PDP disagree over Osun campaign billboards destruction

The representative of Osun Central Senatorial District, Senator Sola Adeyeye, has accused supporters of the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Daisi Aina, of destroying his campaign billboards in Osogbo.

Adeyeye said this in an interview with journalists in Osogbo on Wednesday.

He, however, admitted that some of his supporters who were angered by the vandalism retaliated by destroying campaign bill boards of the PDP candidate.

But the State Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Bola Ajao, who is also from Osun Central Senatorial District accused supporters of the ruling party of staring the wanton destruction of the opposition party members.

Adeyeye described the development as “reprehensible and irrational.” he said politicking should be approached with decorum and candidates should warn their followers to shun vandalism and violence.

The senator said “From what I heard, the opposition party in Osun State started the act. My campaign posters were defaced and billboards pulled down and torn by some unknown people believed to be supporters of the opposition candidate.

“While I abhor the act of deliberate destruction of my campaign materials, I also detest the act of reprisal by my supporters, who did same thing to the PDP’s candidate billboards and posters. Two wrongs can never make a right and we need to work towards a peaceful and united Osun State regardless of party affiliations.”

Ajao also called on security agencies to be at alert and intensify their efforts towards curbing unlawful act which could destabilize the state.

The PDP secretary said, ” It is funny to claim that PDP started it. They started it. The billboards have been there for sometime and nobody touched them. Why is is that it is now that election is closer that they started destroying billboards of the opposition.

“We saw it this morning at Oke fia, Olaiya Junction and some other areas and we were compelled to inform security agencies. We have written to security agencies on it. APC members should be warned to desist from this. What they are doing could lead to serious crisis.”

Politicians shun police stakeholders’ meeting in Bayelsa

Politicians, comprising candidates for various political positions and leaders of parties in Bayelsa State, on Wednesday, shunned a one-day stakeholders’ meeting organized by the state Police Command.

The major political parties and its officials including members of the Peoples Democratic Party, were absent at the gathering .

Also, candidates vying for elective positions in the National Assembly and state Houses of Assembly also shunned the stakeholders’ meeting held at the Police Officers Mess, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital.

It was noticed that only the Assembly candidate from the Kowa Party, Okidi Werin, representing Sagbama Constituency 1, was present at the gathering.

Commissioner of Police, Mr. Valentine Ntomchukwu, while addressing participants, frowned at the absence of political party officers and major stakeholders in the state.

Ntomchukwu said, “No members of the PDP are present; no APC members or candidates vying for any elective positions are present here. Even those seeking elective positions in the Senate, House of Representatives and state House of Assembly are present.”

Notomchukwu, who expressed sadness over the poor turn out of the participants, said the police would deal decisively with any body or group of people that foment trouble before and after the election in the state.

“Anybody, who wants to foment trouble on the day of the election would be dealt with decisively, please do not be deceived by any body that he can rig the election,” he said.

The police boss also told the stakeholders that the police were fully prepared for the 2015 election and called on the public to ensure total peace.

Ntomchukwu also urged the participants to cooperate with the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies to ensure a hitch free poll.
